2024 US Foliage Forecast
As we look ahead to the 2024 fall foliage season, let's explore some fascinating factors that will shape this colorful spectacle across the United States:
Yellow pigments, called xanthophylls, are present in leaves all year but are usually masked by green chlorophyll. As days shorten, chlorophyll breaks down, revealing the hidden yellows - no matter the weather!
Fall's vibrant reds come from sugars trapped in leaves. Warm, sunny days and cool nights in early fall create a sugar build-up, producing vivid reds in maples and other species.
Moderate drought stress can actually enhance fall colors by increasing sugar concentration in leaves. However, severe drought can cause leaves to brown and drop early, shortening the colorful display.
Abundant rainfall, like that experienced in Vermont and Connecticut this year, can lead to more intense and longer-lasting fall colors. However, too much rain can also delay the onset of color changes.
As these factors interplay across the country, each year's foliage becomes a unique work of natural art, inviting us to marvel at the ever-changing beauty of the seasons.
